Technical Information
Ranger Outpost has been developed specifically for school and college networks. Because we understand the unique requirements of education, we've designed Ranger Outpost to be quick and simple to install, easy to use and above all secure.
Ranger Outpost Pre-Installation Checks:
Before installing Ranger Outpost it is recommended that you check you are able to provide a route through your firewall to allow remote users to connect to your Outpost server.
- Check the router/firewall is configured to forward all traffic from external sources to your Ranger Outpost server on the chosen port
- Confirm your ISP has opened the chosen port and allows traffic through to your site
- Confirm the above is setup correctly by running the Ranger Outpost Connectivity Testing Tool
Features:
- Access your network home area and shared files/folders from any internet connected PC
- Track file transfer times with automatic progress bars that display approximate connection speed and transfer time remaining
- Ranger Outpost Clients can be installed on any MS operating system from windows 98 (second edition) to Windows XP Professional
Security:
- Security against user spoofing - all connections secured using industry standard RSA 1024 bit public/private keys
- File access security - Windows file permissions provide server access security. Only authenticated users can access files
- Login security - user passwords are not passed across the internet as an authentication public/private key pair system is used
- Data Encryption - all file transfers are encrypted using advanced RC4 encryption
- Limiting Access - users only have access to their home folder and designated network shared folders
| Server | |
| A router/gateway with an externally visible public IP address and (optionally) DNS name. | |
| A Domain Controller to host the Outpost server application. | |
| The LAN's firewall must be configured to port forward all traffic arriving at the gateway on a specific port to the same port on the Outpost server. | |
| At least 512/256k ADSL internet connectivity. The faster the bandwidth the faster file transfer will be for remote users. Upstream bandwidth is the most important factor affecting transfer speeds and usability. | |
| Client | |
| A computer with either local LAN access or internet access (minimum 56k dial-up or broadband recommended) running either: | |
| Windows 95 (with internet Explorer v4 or later) | |
| Windows 98 | |
| Windows ME | |
| Windows 2000 Professional | |
| Windows XP Home/Professional | |
| Windows Vista | |
